Rev. Patrick Posey, Pastor

Established in 1892, St. James lies in the heart of scenic Falls Church, seven miles outside of Washington, D.C.

St. James Catholic Church

In 1873, Richmond Bishop James Gibbons established St. James as a mission of St. Mary Parish in Alexandria. Six years later, a frame chapel was built on land donated by Sabilla Sewall about half a mile from the West End Station of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad. The clapboard chapel served Falls Church Catholics for 23 years. On the chapel site today is St. James Cemetery at S. West Street and Fowler Street. Old tombstones tell stories of Irish Catholics who came to work on the railroad. In 1892, St. James, with 325 members, became a parish of the Richmond Diocese. Father Edward Tierney from Harper’s Ferry, W.Va., was appointed first pastor.

Today, St. James Church is home to approximately 7,500 parishioners and the St. James School has 750 students.

The Sisters of Perpetual Adoration opened the Academy of Perpetual Adoration in 1906 with 2 teachers. Tuition was $1 per month for grade school, $2 for high school. The school grew until 1919 when it reached capacity. The school continued to do well, but because of several factors the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration had to close the convent and school in July of 1923.

In July of 1923 the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary arrived. On September 17, 1923, the sisters opened the school with 92 students. The grade school progressed well, and the high school was soon awarded affiliation with the Catholic University of America. With the help of the mother house, the Sisters survived the Depression, taking in boarders from kindergarten through grade 8.

By 1956 the school facilities had grown so large that the sisters were conducting separate morning and afternoon sessions with classes of 60 or more in each. During the 1960's, commitments by the sisters to growing parishes led to a decrease in new assignments to Saint James, so an increasing number of lay teachers were hired.

Because of St. James' excellent reputation and its accreditation by the Virginia Catholic Education Association, and a dedicated and professional faculty and staff, by 1996 the school had grown to over 600 students. There are 3 classroom sisters, 25 lay teachers, and 3 sisters serving as principal, Religious Education Director and Administrative Assistant. The Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is a Pontifical Religious Institute, whose members are committed to God and to the Church by the profession of the public vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
