Meet Our First Pastors - Fathers Tearney and Bowler

From 1874 to 1892, the Mission at St. James was served by St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Alexandria. The visiting priest from Saint Mary’s would journey 13 miles over rolling hills every Sunday to celebrate Holy Mass. Initially a few Catholics lived in this small village. But the West Falls Church mission began to grow and soon after other missions began to expand outward.

These angels were in our first church building... and remain in Falls Church!

The white clapboard church with a 66 foot bell tower would be at home in any New England town. But this one was in a small southern village, recovering from war...

On Sunday, May 21, 2017, St. James Parish will celebrate the 125th Anniversary of its establishment as a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Richmond, the only Catholic diocese in Virginia at the time.  Check out photos of cornerstones of buildings in the parish today and learn more...
